Ben's, KLCC, Malaysia

Ben's is an affable place to meet friends in the KLCC area.  Located in California Pizza Kitchen's old spot, its simple design,  large windows overlooking KLCC park and fountain, and comfortable oversized seating spur conversations to linger on as you leisurely pass the hours. Most meals I've eaten here have been toothsome with particular note going to the duck confit spaghettini with sun dried tomatoes. A sufficient selection of salads is offered but, unless you like your lettuce served drowning, remember to ask for the dressing on the side. Prices are reasonable for this area with most salads and pastas in the vicinity of 20RM.  Coffee is sourced from Melbourne and around 7RM for an espresso based drink. While the coffee is well made, with pretty crema artwork, I think most serious coffee drinkers might prefer a stronger blend.

Arthur's Bar & Grill, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

If I could afford to drink every glass of wine outside my home I might just do quite a bit of that sipping at Arthur's Bar & Grill. I'd walk straight through the first section - even though there's a big screen for live sports watching, an attractive looking bar, comfy leather seating and live music on occasion - and head straight out the back to the oval room. With floor to ceiling windows framed with lush green trees and overlooking the action of Sultan Ismail junctioning with Jalan P. Ramlee, there's no need to look elsewhere for entertainment. A fine place to watch the street happenings and feel happy that you're  sheltered in air conditioned comfort with a select drink list and tummy filling food.  I'd be quite happy to start my evening with a light red and their warm crunchy topped bread served in a hot ceramic pot with sun-dried tomato dippings and continue on exploring their wine menu for the rest of the evening.  However, if also roused to eat, Arthur's decent sized burgers filled with juicy patties and accompanied with rockin' wedges would be a fine choice. Endive salad sprinkled with pomegranate, walnuts and spinach leaves is a crisp choice for the more health conscious. With regular Happy Hours giving free drinks to the ladies I might just be able to fulfill that thought more often than not.

Earth Food, Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Earth Food has moved! Just down the road from their old location, their soft launch was last Friday.  These guys are having to start all over again with renovations and gardens and sorting out all of those kinks that go with getting a new business off the ground. It's the same health conscious and environmentally responsible concept as before so to save repeating myself see the older post on their previous location here:
But with exciting plans for the future such as organic gardening, a stone pizza oven, onsite bakery and a wine cellar (!) this place is worth supporting to help them grow.

Launch of new wheat beers, Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar, Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Beer and pork lovers alike will not be disappointed again at Weissbrau with the launch of three new wheat beers and whiskey. The pork knuckle and sausages are impressive in taste and in serving size. I think the saying of "eat your veges to grow up big and strong" is proved wrong in this case, all you need is beer and pork and you'll be the size of a German. Search for Weissbrau in the search box at the top of this blog to see a couple of other posts about this location.

Real and Wholesome (RAW), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

For a place that serves such delightful coffee and scrumptious refection I'd expect to see more people here on a weekend. I'm told though that during the week it gets quite busy serving office workers in the area. Real and Wholesome is a lovely place for a light snack and saporous cup of coffee. It's spacious with lots of natural light, a handsome coffee maker and plenty of parking. At the moment the cafe menu is light but will shortly expand with a vegetarian restaurant opening up out back as soon as a suitable chef is found. The pesto and mushroom toastie is yum and they offer quirky twists on already healthy dishes such as pumpkin hummus. The number one reason to come here though is the coffee. Beans are freshly roasted by Artisan Roast (a local couple importing beans from Indonesia) and expertly prepared by a well trained barista on a dapper espresso machine. If that's not enough justification to come, how about the fact that they are attempting to be socially responsible with some design features using sustainable materials, offer you the opportunity to bring your own Tuppaware if you wish to take away meals (otherwise biodegradable packaging is available), focus on healthy vegetarian cuisine and when fully established have plans to donate a percentage of profits every month to charity (beneficiaries changing monthly depending on suggestions and votes by customers). I'd say that is pretty real and wholesome.

Set amid large trees and plentiful greenery, with recycled furniture and open air seating, Artisan Cafe inveigles you to slow down and enjoy the quiescent surroundings. Open Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 8pm, a limited breakfast menu is available until Big C (the cook) leaves around 1pm. Rogue Beer Launch, Craft Brews, Mutiara Damansara, Malaysia

Just when I thought my palate could be stretched no further, along came Craft Brews and the launch of Rogue beers to challenge that assumption. Not a frequent beer drinker, my taste buds were confused with a Chocolate Stout, Mocha Porter and Hazelnut Brown Nectar. My more 'regular' beer drinker was tickled to expand his palate too with drops such as Dead Guy Ale, Brutal IPA, Juniper Pale Ale and the OREgasmic Ale. Currently four of the eight new Rogue beers are available on tap and the remainder by bottle. With plans to transform Malaysia's beer culture by continually introducing exciting new drops to the scene, Craft Brews will be the place for beer lovers and taste explorers alike to keep an eye on.
